ABOUT REFLECTIONS

Students create original works of art in response to a theme. The theme for 2024-2025  is “Accepting Imperfection.”

An original work must be created that reflects upon this theme. Interpretation fo the theme represents 40% of the judge’s score and can be the determining factor when deciding which works move on to the next level of competition.

Creativity in expression is encouraged!

A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas: dance, film, literature, music photography & visual arts. Only original works of art are accepted.

ABOUT THE JUDGING PROCESS:

Participation is organized by student age and grade levels. Student works are critiqued against others in the same grade division. This allows recognition and judging of artworks by appropriate developmental age and skill levels. The grade divisions are:

  • Primary: Pre-school – Grade 2
  • Intermediate: Grades 3 – 5
  • Middle School: Grades 6 – 8
  • High School: Grades 9 – 12
  • If your child has 504/IEP or ADA accommodations, they can choose to enter in the accessible arts division.
    • Accessible Arts* - Pre-K-Grade 5
    • Accessible Arts* - Grades 6 -12

All PTA Reflections program entries are judged on three criteria:

  1. Interpretation of Theme (20 pts.) -How closely the piece relates to the theme, based on the artwork itself and the artist statement.
  2. Creativity (10 pts.) - How creative and original the piece is in its conception of the theme and its presentation.
  3. Technique (10 pts.) - The level of skill demonstrated in the basic principles/ techniques of the arts area.
  • Notice how “Interpretation of Theme” is weighted? This is what makes the National PTA Reflections Arts Program unique. A well-developed concept is more important than technique.
